Transcranial Dopplers

Transcranial Dopplers and Eye Health

At Edwards Eye Care, we are committed to providing comprehensive eye care that looks beyond just vision. One of the advanced technologies we use is transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound, a non-invasive test that measures blood flow in the major arteries supplying the brain and eyes. Because the health of your eyes is closely tied to circulation, TCD testing can provide critical information about vascular health that directly impacts vision.

TCD is especially important in detecting changes that may affect the optic nerve and retina, such as reduced blood flow from carotid artery disease, microvascular complications from diabetes or hypertension, or early signs of stroke risk. In some cases, patients experiencing sudden vision changes, visual field loss, or unexplained headaches may benefit from TCD testing as part of their eye exam. By measuring the speed and quality of blood flow, we can identify potential problems early—before they cause irreversible damage to vision.

This technology is also valuable in monitoring systemic conditions that affect the eyes. For example, glaucoma, ocular ischemic syndrome, and certain retinal vascular disorders are influenced by blood circulation. Using TCD, we can evaluate whether poor vascular supply may be contributing to disease progression, allowing us to coordinate care with your primary physician or a specialist for the best outcomes.

By integrating transcranial Doppler testing into our eye care services, we ensure our patients receive not only excellent vision care but also proactive screening for conditions that affect both ocular and overall health. This comprehensive approach reflects our mission: protecting your sight today while safeguarding your long-term health.
